Our story

Mark Lenington · Certified Sommelier

LearnSomm was created by Mark Lenington, a Certified Sommelier (Court of Master Sommeliers) with more than twenty years in Chicago fine dining. On the floor, the hardest part of wine and food isn’t memorizing facts — it’s finding the right word for what’s in the glass and explaining it to a guest in a sentence. LearnSomm turns that skill into something you can practice: spin a wheel, land on a term, hear it pronounced, and learn what it means, where it comes from and how to use it.

Today the library covers wine, grapes and regions, spirits and cocktails, beer, sake, coffee, tea, cheese, charcuterie and the cuisines of the world — and it keeps growing.

Getting started
What is LearnSomm?

A library of interactive tasting and study wheels. Each wheel is a map of one subject — wine aromas, a grape, a region, a spirit, a cuisine — and every term on it opens to short study notes and its pronunciation. You can study in Office (one or two wheels side by side), explore Worlds (scenic rooms and vineyards with wheels as rings), take quizzes, and print sheets, booklets and Field Guides.

Is it free to try?

Yes. Create a free account and pick a starter set — Coffee or Tea — and those two wheels are yours. The whole library is shown as one free wheel, The LearnSomm Library, so you can browse every wheel before you buy.

What devices does it work on?

Any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Your account and wheels follow you when you sign in on another device.

Which languages?

English, Spanish, French and Italian — the wheels, the study notes, the pronunciation and the printables. Switch language at any time.

Content & accuracy
Who writes the content?

The wheels are built under Mark Lenington, a Certified Sommelier, using named sources and modern research and translation software, then reviewed by hand. See Where does the information come from?

Is it written by a person?

Yes — with good software doing the heavy lifting on research, drafting and translation. Every wheel is built on named sources and reviewed by a sommelier, and most list their sources so you can check them. We’d rather tell you that plainly than pretend otherwise.

How accurate is it?

As accurate as we can make it, with sources you can check. Laws, statistics and vintages change, so we update the wheels and fix anything a reader flags. If you spot something, tell us and we’ll correct it.

Will it help me pass a sommelier or WSET exam?

It’s a strong study companion for the knowledge behind those exams — grapes, regions, structure, service, spirits — and the deductive-tasting and service wheels are built for practice. It is not official course material and isn’t endorsed by any exam body, so use it alongside your course.

How do I report a mistake?

Use Feedback inside the app. Restaurant people are great at catching errors — we fix them and keep the wheels current.

Buying & access
How does pricing work?

Buy single wheels or bundles — Wine Essentials, the Grape Library, Wine Regions of the World, the Spirits & Cocktail Bar, the Sommelier Path, Cuisines of the World and more — or The Vault, every wheel. During the Launch Era every price is reduced, and bundles cost less than their wheels bought one by one. Build Your Own bundles get bigger discounts the more you add.

Do I keep what I buy?

Yes — a wheel you buy is unlocked on your account, with its printables in all four languages.

Is paying safe?

Payments go through Stripe’s secure checkout. Your card details go to Stripe, not to LearnSomm.

Can I give LearnSomm as a gift?

Yes. Any wheel or bundle can be bought as a gift, delivered now or on a date you choose, with a personal note. The recipient gets a code to unlock it on their own account.

I have an invitation or gift code. Where do I enter it?

Open Account (or tap any locked wheel), choose Have an invitation or gift code?, enter it and press Redeem. Your printables are offered right away.

Can I unlock wheels without buying them?

Yes. Pass quizzes for points and pass a wheel’s Lightning Hour test to earn an unlock. Points open higher tiers of the library, from coffee and tea up to the sommelier’s table.

Learning features
What are Quizzes and Lightning Hour?

Quizzes are 10 quick questions on any wheel you own, any time. Tests open during Lightning Hour — the first ten minutes of every hour — with 20 questions. You choose 7 seconds per question for double points or 15 seconds for single points.

What are the printables?

For each wheel: a cut-out sheet with the wheel on the front and its quick reference on the back, a fold-up pocket booklet, and an illustrated Field Guide — in English, Spanish, French and Italian.

What do you store about me?

Your email and name for your account, the wheels you own, and your quiz progress, so they follow you between devices. Payments are handled by Stripe.

How it’s made
How is a wheel built?

Four steps, every wheel:

Where does the information come from?

Most wheels list their sources inside the wheel — more than 500 citations across the library, from official regulations (U.S. federal rules, the European Union, the UK’s Scotch Whisky Regulations), appellation councils and trade bodies, to research from places like UC Davis and the Australian Wine Research Institute, and the wine and spirits press. We cite them so you can check anything yourself.

What tools are behind the work?

A one-person team gets a lot of help from modern research, writing and translation software — the way a kitchen leans on good equipment. It speeds up the prep; it never decides what’s true. That comes from the sources and from a sommelier’s palate and review. Every translation is checked for the wine and food terms that matter on the floor.

Is LearnSomm connected to the Court of Master Sommeliers or WSET?

No. LearnSomm is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by the Court of Master Sommeliers, the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) or any certification body, and it does not reproduce their course or exam materials. Mark’s credential is stated so you know who built it — not as an endorsement.
